Aminoacylation
Proteins are made up of Amino Acids, and are built by the following steps.
- The two strands of DNA split,
- A copy of the main DNA strand is taken by an mRNA,
- The mRNA travels to a Ribosome,
- The Ribosome "walks" along the mRNA reading Codons,
- At each Codon, the appropriate tRNA delivers the appropriate Amino Acid to
the Ribosome,
- The Ribosome takes the Amino Acid off the tRNA and joins it onto the
growing protein.
However, before step 5 can take place, the tRNA must pick up the Amino Acid.
Then, after step 6, another Amino Acid must be picked up by the tRNA.
Aminoacylation is the process of adding an
Amino Acid onto a tRNA.
There are 20 Amino Acids and there are 20 matching tRNAs.
Each of the 20 tRNAs is aminoacylated by a matching enzyme called aminoacyl-tRNA-synthetases.

Although I don't have any medical qualifications,
as a sufferer of Diabetes, Deafness and Tinnitus caused by the A3243G mtDNA defect,
I do have a very keen interest in the subject.
