Codon
A Codon is a group of three nucleotides of DNA which specifies one of 20 Amino
Acids. A code based on three nucleotides can specify 64 possibilities.
There are also Start Codons and Stop Codons to mark the start and end of a
sequence of DNA and therefore the start and end of a protein. There is one Start
Codon and three Stop Codons.
With 20 Amino Acids there are some amino acids which can be specified by
more than one Codon.
The meaning of each Codon is exactly the same in virtually every organism - a
strong argument that life on earth evolved only once.
A very few changes to a few Codons have been found, but these are believed to be later
evolutionary developments. From an A3243G point of view, it is interesting that
mtDNA in Mitochondria are one of these exceptions.

Although I don't have any medical qualifications,
as a sufferer of Diabetes, Deafness and Tinnitus caused by the A3243G mtDNA defect,
I do have a very keen interest in the subject.
