Diabetes
Diabetes, (Diabetes Mellitus), is is a disease where there is too much sugar (glucose) in
the blood.
The two major classifications of Diabetes are
- Type I. This is an auto-immune disease where the body's immune system
destroys the Pancreatic Beta cells leading to a lack of production of Insulin,
(maybe even no Insulin at all).
This used to be called Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus or IDDM. About 10%
of Diabetics are Type I.
- Type II. This is a disease where even though some Insulin is produced - maybe
at normal or even elevated levels, it is still not enough for the body's
requirements. This used to be called Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus or
NIDDM. About 90% of Diabetics are Type II.
Much of what is written in books and on the internet is aimed at these two
classifications.
However there are several other classifications including MODY and MIDD.
- MIDD. About 1% of Diabetes is caused by the A3243G mutation leading to
MIDD.

Although I don't have any medical qualifications,
as a sufferer of Diabetes, Deafness and Tinnitus caused by the A3243G mtDNA defect,
I do have a very keen interest in the subject.
