Haplotype
Words beginning with Haplo- are derived from the greek meaning "one", (other examples of this naming strategy
are Diplo- meaning "two", Tri- meaning "three", etc).
Haploid pertains to one set of genes and Diploid to two sets of genes.
Nuclear DNA is Diploid because half comes from mother and half from the father.
mtDNA however only comes from the mother so this is Haploid.
A Haplotype is the complete genetic sequence of DNA coming from one source
mtDNA is slightly different between racial groups, and has allowed scientists to
trace the migration of humans out of Africa, using "mtDNA Haplotyping".

Although I don't have any medical qualifications,
as a sufferer of Diabetes, Deafness and Tinnitus caused by the A3243G mtDNA defect,
I do have a very keen interest in the subject.
