Ragged Red Fibres
Ragged Red Fibres is a name given to the appearance of muscle fibres taken from a muscle biopsy,
from somebody with a mitochondrial disorder, when viewed under a microscope.
As the muscle cell finds itself with limited energy, more mitochondria are
produced to try to produce the appropriate amount of energy.
The new mitochondria are themselves faulty, so even more mitochondria are
produced.
If a muscle biopsy is stained with Gomori trichrome stain then viewed under a
microscope, the mitochondria show
up red, and the muscle fibre has a characteristic ragged appearance.

Although I don't have any medical qualifications,
as a sufferer of Diabetes, Deafness and Tinnitus caused by the A3243G mtDNA defect,
I do have a very keen interest in the subject.
