Southern Blot
A Southern Blot is a method of analysing a large piece of DNA by chopping it up
into small pieces using chemicals and enzymes. The mixture of small DNA pieces
is then placed on a gel plate and an electric current applied. The resulting
pattern is dependent on a number factors, including the size of the DNA pieces.
A radioactive binding agent is then applied and a "blot" is taken onto a
separate sheet. This sheet is then developed in the same way as photographic
negative.
The method is named after its inventor Edwin Southern.
(Humorously, two similar methods are called "Northern Blotting" and "Western
Blotting").

Although I don't have any medical qualifications,
as a sufferer of Diabetes, Deafness and Tinnitus caused by the A3243G mtDNA defect,
I do have a very keen interest in the subject.
