Andy Collinson's JourneyIn my youth I was always interested in flying, something which has stayed with me throughout my life. In my teens I flew Chipmunks, Sailplanes, Cessnas and Cherokees In 1980, aged 21, I finished my degree in Human Psychology and joined the family firm, making livestock feeding equipment - concentrating on computers, which have been a part of my life ever since. Within a few years, I developed Tinnitus - which drove me mad! I also went gradually Deaf, getting my first hearing aids at the age of about 25. The hearing aids help mask the Tinnitus and I wear them every waking moment. I pursued my career in computing in the family firm for 10 years. I then ran my own computer dealership, until this went bust after 4 years. I have been "computer contracting" for the last 7 years, and unfortunately unemployed for the last 2 years. I became interested in Paragliding, and have flown in England, France and Spain. I am Pilot rated with about 150 hours. My longest flight was 4 hours and my highest flight was to 8,000 foot. At the age of 42 I became Diabetic. I was taking Glucosamine and Chondroitin for my arthritis, and I'm sure this took the Diabetes into the critical phase and crystallised the problem sooner than it otherwise would have. The consultant took a blood sample, which confirmed an A3243G mtDNA point mutation. I have now traced the maternal family and located the following who are /
were MIDD:
I investigated MIDD extensively on the web and was disappointed at the level of information available. I was quite ill early in the New Year 2002, and during some time off work, I founded www.A3243G.com. I hope it helps everyone over the years, and continues to grow. I have funded www.A3243G.com website out of my own pocket. Help is gradually starting on the website with one person looking after the Abstracts and another person funding the Translator. After only 6 months on Sulphonylureas, I am now on Insulin. I have recently changed my diet with exceptional results. I used to follow the diabetic recommendations for a low fat / high carbohydrate diet. However, I have now switched to a high protein diet and my glucose readings are exceptional - they are always around 5 mmol/l (90mg/dl in American values). I have been having fewer headaches.
