Metformin
Metformin is is a drug often used in the treatment of Type II diabetes. However this is not recommended for diabetes of type MIDD, because of it's published ability to induce lactic-acidosis and the vulnerability of individuals with impaired mitochondrial function for developing mitochondrial lactic-acidosis.

Valproate
Valproate is usually used in the treatment of epilepsy, to help control the fits (seizures or blackouts). Valproate can also be used to help mood disorders (especially if the person is "high") and some other illnesses.
However several studies suggest that Valproate should not be given to patients suspected of having mitochondrial diseases.
