Co Q 10 Treatment for A3243G .Co Q 10 CoQ10 is also known as Ubiquinone.
One of the first proven treatments for MIDD, is CoQ10 .
How it works: Inside the Mitochondria, glucose is converted into energy in the form of ATP. The ATP then moves out of the mitochondria into the cell where it is used to provide energy for the various processes in the cell. As the ATP releases energy, it is converted into ADP. The ADP returns to the mitochondria in order to pick up more energy by being converted back into ATP.
The whole process of breaking down glucose and converting ADP into ATP is known as Oxidative Phosphorylation. The final stages of this process uses 5 large proteins, called Complexes I to V (one to five), which are located on the inner membrane of the mitochondria. Complexes I to IV (one to four) build up electrical energy - in the inter-membrane space of the mitochondria, then Complex V (five) converts the stored up electrical energy into ATP. Complexes 1 to IV (one to four), are linked together by several molecules moving in and around the inner membrane of the mitochondria. CoQ10 is one of these molecules. CoQ10 "dissolves" in the lipids of the inner membrane of the mitochondria. CoQ10 connects Complex I (one) to Complex III (three); also, it connects Complex II (two) to Complex III (three). Looked at the other way round Complex III (three) receives CoQ10 from Complexes I and II (one and two).
Ensuring that there is plenty of CoQ10 available, seemed a logical step in treatment. The experiments by Suzuki et al were the first to actually prove that CoQ10 is of benefit to MIDD patients.
There are several types of CoQ10 becoming available, each is approximately as effective as the others, with some being easier to swallow: References 1 .
